Breast Augmentation
Technically known augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. Breast augmentation is used to enhance the size, shape and appearance of a woman’s breast for several reasons such as:
Types of breast implants:
Implant type and size will be determined not just on your desired increase in size but more importantly on your breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type.
Saline Implants
The exterior sac is made of solid silicone, but the interior is filled with sterile saline solution. They can be filled with varying amounts of saline which can affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast. Should the implant shell leak, a saline breast implant will collapse, and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel. The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell or may escape into the breast implant pocket.
A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not collapse. If you choose these implants, you may need to visit your cosmetic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly. An ultrasound or MRI screening can assess the condition of breast implants.
Benefits
Increasing fullness and projection of your breasts
Improving the balance of your figure
Enhancing your self-image and self-confidence
Balancing a difference in breast size
Reconstructing breast after mastectomy or injury
Breast implant incisions:
Peri-Areolar - the incision is made like a half circle at the outer edge of the areola.
Trans-Axillary – the incision is placed at the armpit, a less desirable technique because it is far from the central location of the implant.
Trans-umbilical (TUBA) – an incision at the edge of the “belly button” through which a metal tube that carries the breast implant is pushed towards the breast to place the implant.
Inframammary Breast Augmentation- an incision is made along the bottom crease of the breast, near the location where the breast meets the rib cage.
Shapes of implants:
-Round
Round Implants are the most common implant shape for a cosmetic operation of Breast Augmentation. As you can see on the image they provide a round, fullness, and symmetrical look due to it’s shape. Round implants have a less risk of rotation causing asymmetrical look if the implant were to move its position.
-Teardrop -“Anatomic”
Anatomic Implants or commonly known as “Teardrop” are implants that are narrow at the top with a fuller bottom giving it the shape of a teardrop. This type of implant gives a more natural look as most natural breasts are narrow/ thinner at the top with a fuller bottom when looking at the side profile.

Breast Augmentation results:
The results of your breast augmentation surgery will be long-lasting. You will find it easier to wear certain styles of clothing and swim wear. Implants may need to be replaced or revised. It's important to know that after receiving breast implants, results are not permanent, and they may require replacement during your lifetime. You should expect to have future visits with your surgeon to discuss changes in your breasts. Over time, your breasts can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and gravity. If, after a period of years, you become dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, you may choose to undergo a breast lift or implant exchange to restore a more youthful contour.
