Rhinoplasty or nose surgery, sometimes referred to as “nose reshaping” or a “nose job,” improves the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial harmony and self-confidence. Surgery of the nose may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose.
Rhinoplasty & Septoplasty
How can the nose be reshaped?
Rhinoplasty can address three distinct areas of the nose:
The nasal bones (the upper 1/3 of the nose)
The ‘hump’ or reshaped
The tip (the lower 1/3)
The flaring of the nostrils
Your nose reshaping will be individualized to make your nose look the way you envision but with natural –looking results.
How is rhinoplasty performed?
There are two basic rhinoplasty techniques: open and closed.
Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision in the columella- the skin that separates the nostrils as well as the skin inside the nostrils. This allows me to lift the skin and shape the tip of the nose very precisely.
Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions made inside the nostrils only.”
Preparing for nose surgery
Getting lab testing or a medical evaluation.
Taking certain medications or adjusting your current medications.
Stop smoking well in advance of surgery.
Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.
Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct a deviated septum. The septum is the cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity in half, and a deviated septum is when it is shifted or off-center, causing breathing difficulties and other problems.
During septoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision inside the nostril to access the septum. They then remove or reshape the affected cartilage and bone, so that it is in the correct position. The procedure can usually be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's preference and the extent of the surgery.
Septoplasty is typically done on an outpatient basis, and patients can usually return home the same day. Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to work or school within a week or two. It is important to follow the surgeon's postoperative instructions carefully to promote healing and prevent complications.
Some potential benefits of septoplasty include improved breathing, reduced snoring, and better sleep quality. However, like any surgical procedure, septoplasty carries some risks and potential complications, including bleeding, infection, and changes in the shape of the nose. Patients should discuss the potential risks and benefits of septoplasty with an experienced ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon before undergoing the procedure.
Postoperative Period
After your procedure is completed, no internal tubes, or packing will likely be placed inside your nose and a splint or bandage placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing. Most patients can go back to work in 7-10 days.
Risks and safety information
The decision to have nose surgery is extremely personal and you’ll have to decide if the benefits will fulfill your goals and if the risks and potential rhinoplasty complications are acceptable.
Some possible risks include:
Nasal airway alterations may occur after a rhinoplasty or septoplasty that may interfere with normal passage of air through the nose.
Nasal septal perforation (a hole in the nasal septum) may develop but is rare; additional surgical treatment may be necessary to repair the nasal septum but, in some cases, it may be impossible to correct this complication.
Unfavorable rhinoplasty scarring
Skin contour irregularities
Skin discoloration and post rhinoplasty swelling
Cardiac and pulmonary complications can occur in longer surgical procedures and may be associated with the formation of, or increase in, blood clots in the venous system
Change in skin sensation (numbness)
Pain, which may persist
Possibility of revisional surgery
Sutures may spontaneously surface through the skin, become visible or produce irritation that requires removal.
Rupture of small surface vessels of the nose
Infection
Poor wound healing
Anesthesia risks
Bleeding (hematoma)
Nose asymmetry
Possible need for revision and/ or further surgery.
