Dermabrasion
What is Dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin by removing the outermost layers of the skin. It is typically performed on the face, but can also be used on other parts of the body, such as the neck and hands.
Candidates
Acne scars
Wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, and forehead
Uneven skin texture and tone
Scarring from injury or trauma
The Procedure
During the procedure, the skin is first cleansed and numbed with a local anesthetic. The surgeon then uses a small, handheld instrument with a rotating, abrasive surface to gently "sand" away the outer layers of the skin. This process helps to remove surface imperfections such as acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
After the procedure, the skin may be red and swollen, and patients may experience some discomfort. It is important to avoid sun exposure and to use a gentle moisturizer to help the skin heal properly. Most patients will be able to return to their normal activities within a week or two, though the full healing process may take several months.
Dermabrasion is generally considered safe, but like any surgical procedure, it carries some risks. These can include infection, scarring, and changes in skin color. Patients should consult with a qualified surgeon to discuss their individual needs and determine if dermabrasion is the right choice for them.
Risks
Like any medical procedure, dermabrasion carries some risks and potential complications. Some of the possible risks of dermabrasion include:
Scarring: Although rare, some patients may develop scars after dermabrasion. This is more likely to occur in patients with a history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring.
Infection: There is a risk of infection with any skin procedure, including dermabrasion. To reduce this risk, patients are typically given antibiotics and are advised to keep the treatment area clean and dry.
Changes in skin color: Dermabrasion can cause changes in skin color, particularly in patients with darker skin. These changes may be temporary or permanent.
Hypopigmentation: In some cases, the skin may lose its natural pigment after dermabrasion, resulting in a lighter, uneven skin tone.
Hyperpigmentation: In some cases, the skin may produce too much pigment after dermabrasion, resulting in darker areas of skin.
Allergic reaction: Some patients may experience an allergic reaction to the anesthetic or other medications used during the procedure.
It is important for patients to discuss the potential risks and benefits of dermabrasion with a qualified surgeon before undergoing the procedure. By carefully following the surgeon’s post-procedure instructions, patients can help minimize the risk of complications and promote optimal healing.
