CAPSULAR CONTRACTION
After breast augmentation surgery, it is sometimes normal for scar tissue to form around the implant, creating a "capsule" which can help keep the implant in place. However, if this scar tissue hardens and tightens around the implant, it can lead to a condition known as capsular contracture. Symptoms of capsular contracture include chronic pain, increased firmness or tightness in the breast, changes in breast position or shape, and restricted range of motion. Capsular contracture can be caused by several factors, such as a low-grade bacterial infection introduced during surgery, the presence of hematoma or seroma in the breast pocket, or breast cancer treatment. Patients who are predisposed to developing thick scar tissue or have a family history of autoimmune disease may also be at higher risk of capsular contracture.
The initial signs of capsular contracture include a mild tingling sensation of the implants, distorted appearance of the breasts, and a firmer feel of the implants. Although it's not possible to prevent capsular contracture entirely, there are some ways to lower the risk of developing it, such as choosing cohesive gel implants (silicone) over saline implants, using textured implants over smooth silicone implants, and placing the implants under the muscles. If you experience early signs of capsular contracture, it's essential to contact your surgeon immediately. Capsular contracture can be treated through a secondary breast augmentation with a capsulectomy, where the surgeon removes the implant and surrounding scar tissue and inserts a new implant. Fortunately, capsular contracture is a treatable condition that should not discourage women from getting breast implants.
Treatment for capsular contraction includes:
Surgical procedure -capsulectomy of some or entire capsule removed.
Capsulotomy - open procedure the capsule is released.
External non-surgical capsulotomy
Medication and certain lasers
