Pubic Reduction

A monsplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess skin and fatty tissue from the mons pubis, the tissue mound located in front of the pubic bones typically covered in pubic hair. This procedure aims to lift, tighten, and reshape the mons pubis, ultimately altering its appearance and enhancing its function and comfort. A monsplasty is specifically designed to address the appearance of the mons pubis, unlike tummy tucks or liposuction that do not lift the pubic area and may even increase its prominence. The excess fat is either removed by liposuction or by direct resection. A combination of a monsplasty with a tummy tuck or liposuction may be recommended to achieve the desired results.

During a monsplasty, the patient is generally sedated with general anesthesia, which puts them to sleep and eliminates pain. Alternatively, local anesthesia and an oral sedative may be used, which only numb the mons pubis and the surrounding areas while helping the patient relax and remain easily awakened. The surgeon then uses a sharp, thin knife to make a horizontal incision across the mons pubis, removing excess fatty tissue and skin using surgical scissors or a scalpel. Internal sutures are then used to tighten and shape the muscles and other tissues. Small silicone tubes may be inserted into the mons pubis to drain any blood or fluid, which are stitched into place with the incision itself.

After the surgery, the surgeon covers the incisions with bandages and may apply an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling and provide support to the healing mons pubis. Since most monsplasties are outpatient procedures, patients can usually go home on the same day. Once the surgeon decides that the patient no longer needs monitoring, they will discharge them. However, it is essential to have a family member or friend drive the patient home and take care of them for at least the first 24 hours after the monsplasty.

Some of the potential risks associated with a monsplasty include complications related to anesthesia, difficulties with healing, the possibility of infection, the formation of a mass of clotted blood (hematoma) or a collection of fluid (seroma), numbness, skin discoloration, swelling (edema), unfavorable scarring, asymmetry of the mons pubis, and the skin becoming loose again.
